HCP: 127k Children Engaged in Economic Activity in 2022

Some 127,000 children aged 7 to 17 were engaged in economic activity in 2022, representing 1.6% of this age group, according to the High Commission for Planning (HCP).

“In 2022, of the 7,690,000 children aged 7 to 17 in Morocco, 127,000 were engaged in economic activity, representing 1.6% of this age group,” said the HCP in a note published to mark World Day Against Child Labor, celebrated on June 12.

This share is 3.3% in rural areas (104,000 children) and 0.5% in urban areas (23,000 children), the same source pointed out, noting that this day is an important opportunity to raise awareness of this phenomenon and work together to put an end to it.

It added that the phenomenon of child labor is more widespread among boys than girls, and is often associated with dropping out of school. 81.5% of child workers are male, 91% are aged between 15 and 17, and 82% live in rural areas. In addition, 12.2% of them are still in school, 85.3% have left school and 2.5% have never attended school.

The HCP also stressed that the number of working children continues to fall, adding that compared to 2021, this figure has dropped by 14% and by 48.6% compared to 2017.
