Morocco: 4 Million Tourists by End of April 2023 (Minister)

Four million tourists visited Morocco during the first four months of the year 2023, up 13% compared to 2019, said, Monday in Rabat, Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts and Social Economy, Fatim-Zahra Ammor.

Answering a question on the tourism offer in Morocco, during the weekly session of oral questions in the House of Representatives, Ammor said that tourism revenues at the end of March 2023 have reached 25 billion dirhams, up 51% compared to 2019.

She noted that 70% of tourists are from the European market. Regarding the most popular destinations, 60% of tourists show a preference for the cities of Marrakech and Agadir.

Ammor said that thanks to the emergency plan of 2 billion dirhams, Morocco has managed, for the first time, to reach MAD 93 billion of tourism revenue in 2022, up 16% compared to 2019, adding that overnight stays in classified tourist accommodation establishments amounted to 19 million, growing by 192% compared to 2021.

According to her, domestic tourism has reached a proportion of 42% of these nights, against 31% during the period before the crisis related to covid-19.

Ammor also recalled the roadmap 2023-2026 with a total budget of 6.1 billion dirhams that aims to attract 17.5 million tourists, generate MAD 120 billion of foreign exchange earnings, create 200,000 new direct and indirect jobs, and reposition tourism as a basic sector of the national economy.
