Unemployment: Record Rise Due to Structural Situation of Labor Market

The record rise in the unemployment rate during the first quarter of 2023 is due to several reasons, including the structural situation of the labor market, said the high commissioner for planning, Ahmed Lahlimi Alami.

This structural situation is amplified by another coming from the covid-19, several successive years of drought and an employment policy that has promoted the entry of people who are looking for work, Lahlimi told the Moroccan online business newspaper “Medias24”, considering that this rise in unemployment to 12.9% was “expected”.

“Between the first two quarters of 2022 and 2023, the employed labor force (those working) fell from 10,697,000 to 10,418,000 people, i.e. a net loss of 280,000 job positions over one year,” he said.

These unpaid jobs are in agriculture, and are mostly occupied by women (97%), said Lahlimi, adding that the services have also experienced a significant loss due to the decline in activity in trade, transport and catering.

“To compensate for these declines, there have been job creations in financial activities, insurance, administrative services, health, education, social action, the activity of associations,” said the high commissioner for planning.

He added that the number of unemployed people has increased in one year by 83,000 individuals to reach more than 1.5 million unemployed.
