4th UNGA Committee Highlights Sahrawi Women’s Role in Development Dynamics of Morocco’s Southern Provinces

The role of Sahrawi women in the dynamics of development in the southern provinces was highlighted in New York before the 4th Committee of the United Nations General Assembly.

On this occasion, Moroccan Southern Provinces Deputy Leila Dahi stressed that women play an “important” role in the elaboration and implementation of national policies in the field of development, in accordance with the high vision of HM King Mohammed VI for gender equality as a pillar of a modern state and a democratic society.

As in other regions of the Kingdom, women in the Moroccan Sahara play an active role in the representation of local populations and in the democratic management of their affairs through elected councils, within the framework of advanced regionalization, said Dahi, who is also chairwoman of the Youth Caucus in the Pan-African Parliament (PAP).

On the other hand, she pointed out that the legislative, regional and communal elections of September 2021 were marked by a massive participation of the inhabitants of the two regions of the Moroccan Sahara (66%).

This mobilization demonstrates the attachment of the Sahara’s populations to their Moroccan identity and to the future of the democratic process launched by HM the King, she concluded.
